What are Dental Fillings and Sealants?

Dental fillings and sealants are essential treatments for preventing and repairing tooth decay. Tooth fillings restore teeth affected by cavities, while dental sealants act as a protective barrier to prevent decay before it starts. These treatments help maintain a healthy, cavity-free smile for both children and adults.

What to Expect: Fillings and Sealants

1

Exam & Diagnosis

Our dentist will examine your teeth and take X-rays if needed. If decay is present, we will determine whether a dental filling is necessary or if a dental sealant procedure can help prevent cavities.

2

Cleaning & Preparation

For cavity fillings, we’ll numb the area with local anesthesia, remove decay, and clean the tooth. For dental sealants, we’ll clean and dry the teeth before applying the protective coating.

3

Applying the Filling or Sealant

For composite fillings, we apply tooth-colored resin and harden it with a special light. For dental sealants, a thin layer of protective material is brushed onto the chewing surfaces of molars and cured for durability.

4

Final Adjustments & Protection

Your tooth fillings will be polished and checked for comfort. Sealants will bond to the tooth, creating a smooth surface that repels bacteria and food particles.
